Crime Incidents Around UGA - June 2023

June 23, 2023, we started collecting and cataloging police incidents involving Shootings, Aggravated Assaults, Narcotic Calls, Robberies involving a Weapon, and Homeless calls. Dates are report dates and may not be the actual date of the incident. The list is not inclusive. But it tells a story otherwise unreported. 6/23/2023 70 year old homeless woman sleeping in front of store on Clayton reported her backpack stolen with phone, SS card, GA license at 4am. Early morning hours, a group of males were loud next to where she was sleeping. A call from UGA police to her phone at 10am revealed her license was found in Caldwell Hall that morning and turned in.

6/23/2023 Noon, North Ave, Archer Apartments, resident allowed homeless couple (often invites people to his residence) to stay the night. Car was stolen in the early morning hours, homeless couple gone.

6/23/2023 Afternoon, 26 year old homeless female, trespassing after being barred at apartments on Vine St.

6/23/2023 Possible sexual assault, aggravated sodomy at the Jail. Investigation by ACCPD requested.

6/23/2023 Afternoon, 23 year old female, theft, trespassing at Walmart, possessing and using Fentanyl during arrest, was unresponsive, transported to PRMC, seeking warrant for arrest.

6/23/2023 Evening, Aggravated assault, shotgun victim was hit in the ankle, Athens Garden Apartments. Victim not cooperative, transported to PRMC.

6/23/2023 Evening, 76 year old suicide victim found in Walmart parking lot with revolver. Suicide note left said could not live filled with drugs.

6/24/2023 Midnight, Clayton entrance of Hilton Garden Inn Parking garage, assumed homeless man smoking something, (known spot for public urination). Active probation warrant in Jackson County. Transferred to Jackson County.

6/24/2023 Early morning, Firearm discharged with shell casings, no witnesses, suspects, victims known, Vine and Peter St.

6/24/2023 Evening, Car theft near residence, found abandoned with loaded hand gun in front seat. Birth Certificate from wallet in the car stolen.

6/24/2023 Morning, Homeless man sleeping in front of Tweed Recording, barred for two years.

6/24/2023 Morning, 72 year old female homeless panhandling at Krogers on College Station Road barred for two years from Kroger, complaints from customers.

6/24/2023 Afternoon, homeless woman with Barber St Camp address, trespassing at trailer park on North Ave, Active arrest warrant in Hall County, arrested for transport.

6/24/2023 Evening, location listed McDonald’s Prince Ave, male high on Meth, smashed head through window, meth pipe seized. No mention of arrest or transport.

6/24/2023 Midnight, 22 year old evicted from bar, disruptive behavior in front, arrested with resistance.

6/25/2023 Early morning, 21 year old Male evicted from bar, disruptive at multiple locations in town, arrested for disorderly conduct.

6/25/2023 Early morning, hours, College Ave and E Washington St, Intoxicated man harassing group of pedestrians, including a group of females. Arrested.

6/25/2023 Evening, Theft, Car found engulfed in flames from where owner left it. Car detected on Flock camera just after midnight at Arch St. and N. Peter intersection.

6/25/2023 Evening, 21 year old female DUI after party, Fourth Street, arrested transported to PRMC for blood test.

6/25/2023 Two handguns stolen out of car in parking lot at Scarborough Apartments, Barnett Shoal Road.

6/25/2023 Battery victim, patient in hospital room at PRMC, suspect arrested.

6/26/2023 Afternoon, Homeless woman found at Athens Garden Apartments with warrant in Oconee transported for handoff to Oconee County deputy.

6/26/2023 Morning, Trespassing Male at the Hyatt, previously barred for 2 years. Suspect transported to jail, acting strange, admitted to drug use. Previous record indicated drug use and fentanyl. Refused by jail nurse who indicated he needed to seek medical treatment. He was then transported to PRMC for voluntary treatment at the front door.

6/26/2023 Morning, Assumed homeless woman reported lunch box and birth certificate inside taken by a man wearing a black robe and talking to himself, East Broad Street.

6/26/2023 Midday, Homeless woman operating an unsafe vehicle with trailer on North Ave was issued a citation and vehicle towed. Vehicle had been involved in an earlier accident, owner told to park it at the Uhaul center on North Ave. This incident originated with a complaint of driver’s dog attacking someone.

6/26/2023 Midday, Hit-and-Run with another car on North Ave. Driver located and was having medical difficulty, identified to have taken fentanyl. Drugs in car identified as cocaine mixed with fentanyl. Sent to St. Marys.

6/25/2023 Afternoon, Reckless Conduct arrest, involving shooting a revolver in the air to disrupt domestic argument.

6/26/2023 Evening, Theft at Walmart involving homeless person. Merchandise cost roughly $300. Warrants issued for arrest. One person had previously been barred for two years.

6/26/2023 Evening, Homeless couple barred for 2 years from Little Angels Daycare on Oglethorpe Ave after complaints from parents.

6/26/2023 Evening, Pedestrian hit by train on Jefferson Highway near Athens Country Club. Injured victim transported to PRMC. Victim reported with out-of-town address.

6/26/2023 Night, Homeless woman reported from Golden Pantry, reported at Popeye’s on Milledge causing disturbance, spitting on juvenile and mother. Arrested (as below) after Golden Pantry incident.

6/26/2023 Night, Report of stolen handgun a week earlier with 50 round drum magazine.

6/26/2023 Night, Homeless woman stole food at Golden Pantry on Milledge, causing a disturbance, headed down Broad towards downtown. Suspect arrested, warrant process explained to the business and would have to be completed within 48 hours of arrest for theft charges.

6/26/2023 Report of previous incident - Early Morning, Alleged Armed Robbery while walking in vicinity of Lake Street. 22 year old victim left bar, took Uber to wrong location, was walking to a residence, SUV pulled up, jumped by 4 individuals with masks on, believed to be armed, victim fought back. Took approximately $500 in cash. Victim reported broken finger, thumb, and concussion. Did not seek medical attention as parent is a physician and injuries treated at home.

6/27/2023 Morning, Unnamed business had homeless sleeping at back entrance barred for 2 years.

6/27/2023 Afternoon, Woman entered unlocked apartment at the Flats, Sycamore Drive, damaged apartment, drinking degreaser fluid and eating massive amounts of Melatonin from the bathroom. Suspect transported to Athens-Clarke County jail, uncooperative. Suspect had been previously barred from The Flats Apartments.

6/28/2023 Morning, Man with address of Sparrow’s Nest (homeless day center) barred from Burlington Department Store for disturbance in dressing room which staff thought was masturbation.

6/24/2023, Morning, Two homeless individuals behind the Hampton Inn near their dumpsters were barred from the Hampton Inn for 2 years.

6/28/2023 Homeless couple barred from Somerville Apartments for sleeping next to building on back of property. Barred for 2 years.

6/28/2023 Homeless woman sitting in car at Dollar General expressing thoughts of suicide. Had lost her job and was living in rental car, no support system. Was finally transported to Piedmont Regional Health Center. Apparently wanted to be transported elsewhere but was told could only be transported to the hospital.

6/28/2023 Midday, security camera reported stolen. Also reported that homeless people are littering and loitering on the property. Property in question is a medical office.

6/29/2023 Man using Sparrow’s Nest as address was barred for 2 years from the Hampton Inn for trespassing.

6/29/230 Afternoon, Lullwater Apartments, witness observed 3 men checking for unlocked cars within the parking lot and actively pursued suspects. A second simultaneous call reported a Glock handgun was stolen from a vehicle. Suspects still at large. Witness asked if it occurred again if he could legally fire warning shots. He was informed no he could not.

6/29/2023 Homeless individuals were reported for having sexual relations in their car in the parking lot at Lowes. Lowes management had the couple barred from all Lowes property for 2 years.

6/29/2030 Morning hours, Dollar General reported unknown man left vial of suspected drugs on a shelf in the store. Crystal substance.

6/29/2030 Early evening, Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault, Domestic dispute, neither party wanted to press charges.

6/29/2030 Woman was observed using Fentanyl in wooded area behind Athens Garden Apartments complex. No drugs left to collect or charge her with. Apartment complex barred her for 2 years.

6/29/2030 Midday Man in wheelchair identified by name located at a bus stop after call from Krogers reported repeated theft. Man barred from Krogers for 2 years.

6/29/2023 In the afternoon disorderly homeless woman at Sparrow’s Nest claiming to ask them to call EMS for her. She left then identified by police a short distance away. Sparrow’s Nest contracted and the woman was barred for 2 years.

6/29/2030 Early evening, homeless woman stole some outdoor gear from a downtown store, trespassed in a near by store with stolen merchandise. Merchandise retrieved and the homeless woman barred from both establishments for 2 years.

6/30/2023 Morning, homeless woman had been loitering at the Inn Town Suites and was barred for 2 years.

6/27/2023, Midday, Homeless woman barred from the Classic Center for 2 years after reported for theft, items unidentified.

6/27/2023, Evening, Domestic dispute involved shooting, Aggravated Assault and arrest. Victim sent to PRMC with non-life-threatening injuries.

6/28/2023 Midnight, Disturbance off of Hawthorne, woman arrested for drug dealing, Fentanyl included.

6/30/2023 Report of 2 homeless individuals causing a disturbance at a gas station Jefferson Road. Resulted in both being barred from the gas station for a period of 2 years.

628/2023 Morning, two homeless barred by Leisure Services from Southeast Clarke Park for 2 years for continuous sleeping.
